Reducing the inflammation and swelling in your airways using steroids means you’re less likely to get asthma attacks. Steroids are also useful for people with COPD who get regular flare-ups.

Steroids are a man-made version of hormones normally produced by the adrenal glands, two small glands found above the kidneys.

It is given as an intravenous infusion and repeated infusions
may be necessary. Side effects are common during or following each
infusion including nausea, diarrhoea, chills, fever, headache,

Prednisolone (see Steroids)

Being a male hormone, it means that they will become more aggressive, angry and violent. This may not be true for people taking it short-term, but over a longer period of time, those on anabolic steroids become more likely to act and be paranoid. They may not be able to control themselves and hurt the ones they love. This can be used to help with diseases that destroy muscle mass, like AIDS or certain cancers, but the main appeal comes from weight lifters and people that want to put on muscle, and do it fast. Anabolic steroids are a prescription medication used to treat a variety of legitimate medical needs. Most often, people will be prescribed in the form of inhalers for asthma, or sometimes to help with muscle pain.

The HIV medication may increase the level of corticosteroid in your body. Corticosteroids can sometimes interact with a type of medication known as protease inhibitors (like ritonavir). If you want to check that your medicines are safe to take with your medication, ask your Pharmacist or GP. If you have troublesome side effects, don’t stop taking your medication until your doctor says it’s safe to do so. Steroids that are injected into muscles and joints may cause some pain and swelling at the site of the injection.

You may still develop ulcers, even if you are taking these medicines. You should report any stomach pain, indigestion or heartburn to your team or doctor, particularly if it is becoming more frequent. The main thing your team will do is get the dose of your steroids down as quickly as is possible to keep your condition under control.

Because steroids can cause you to put on weight or have an increased appetite, it’s important to keep an eye on your weight while taking them. Making sensible food choices and including some physical activity in your daily routine should help you avoid putting on weight. If you’re taking high doses of steroids, or if you’re on them for more than three weeks, you’ll need to carry a steroid card. This will have information on your dose and how long you’ve been taking them for. They’re also known as corticosteroids, and are different to anabolic steroids used by bodybuilders and athletes. You may be given a tablet such as Lansoprazole or Omeprazole (amongst others) to protect the lining of your stomach and stop ulcers developing.
