As the world teeters on the brink of destruction, Dietrich Bonhoeffer joins a deadly plot to assassinate Hitler, risking his faith and his fate to save millions of Jews from genocide. Niemoeller’s actor August Diehl previously played an SS Gestapo officer in Dishonored Villains (2009). and a German citizen who resisted conscription into the German army in A Hidden Life (2019). Dietrich Bonhoeffer: We have no defense against stupidity. Neither protest nor violence can affect it. Reasoning is useless. Facts that contradict personal prejudices can simply be believed – in fact, you can contradict them by criticizing the fool, and if they are indisputable, you can dismiss them as trivial exceptions. Well shot and acted. However, the film devotes an inordinate amount of time to Bonhoeffer’s journey in 1930. to New York and his supposed fascination with gospel and jazz. Indeed, his later prison letters reveal the lasting influence of traditional gospel chorales and the hymns of Paul Gerhard on his theology and piety. There is no mention of his engagement to Maria von Wedemeyer (eighteen years his junior), with whom he exchanged dozens of letters in prison (1943-1945), later published under the title “Love Letters from Cell 92”. #39; Maria’s grandmother was the one who financed the seminary of the Confessing Church in Finkenwalde, where Bonhoeffer advocated a kind of “new monasticism”. for the seminarians – with traditional choirs and an arranged psalm. A plot that weaved Maria into the end of Bonhoeffer’s life would raise such intriguing questions as: Why would you get engaged if your world was about to end? Despite all this, it is good that Bonhoeffer’s film has been completed, bringing the story of the struggle for justice to a wider audience.
