The Brazilian film with the greatest international resonance in recent years, I’m Still Here, I’m Still Here, which won the Best Screenplay award at the Venice Film Festival and was nominated for an Oscar, dramatizes the journey of the Paiva family between the arrest of the father, Rubens Paiva, and Eunice’s struggle after the death of her husband. Walter Salles immerses the viewer in the intimacy of this family, making him a companion, he worries about the fate of each one, creating three-dimensional, real, believable characters. Fernanda Torres, a Greek heroine marked by tragedy, plays the role of her life with subtlety, never falling into excess or caricature. The detailed production design, the formal script, the natural performances, the hand-picked soundtrack, the precise editing, everything contributes to ensuring that the director manages to convey exactly what he is supposed to do. Since I know the story and have read the book on which the film is based, as well as reports about it, my attention was drawn to the cinematic solutions used by the director. He manages to transform it into something universal, capable of communicating with audiences around the world.
