Narrative
Leonard Fife (Richard Gere), an ailing and passionate filmmaker who feels his age and illness have made him angry, wants to tell the story of his life, unfiltered, before it’s too late. As a filmmaker of acclaimed documentaries, he has much to be proud of, but his decision to avoid the Vietnam War and his past relationships hide thorny truths. Determined to finally uncover the truth and lies of his life and career, Leonard sits down for an extensive taped interview with his former student Malcolm (Michael Imperioli), continuing with candid stories about himself (Jacob Elordi) in the troubled 60s and beyond. At Leonard’s insistence, his wife and indispensable companion Emma (Uma Thurman) listens in on everything. Leonard’s successes are contrasted with his failures, lies with facts, and as the whole man is cleansed of myth, Leonard must confront what remains.
