A much earlier usage of the word ‘twerk’ occurs in the lyrics of a live album from 1971 by Frank Zappa on a song titled Magdalena on the live album Just Another Band from L.A.

The 2012 single “Bandz a Make Her Dance” by Juicy J contains the lyric “Start twerking when she hear her song”,[33] while French Montana questions the ability of a girl to twerk by asking “What you twerkin’ with?” in his 2012 single “Pop That” featuring fellow rappers Drake, Lil Wayne and Rick Ross.[34] The aforementioned songs, along with “Express Yourself” by Nicky Da B and Diplo, “made twerking the most popular dance move since the Dougie”.[35] In 2014, the song “Anaconda” by Nicki Minaj peaked at number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, makes numerous allusions to twerking. As the girl on fire tells it, “I tried making a sexy twerk video for my boyfriend, and things got a little too hot.” Judging by the haphazard arrangement of this girl’s apartment, we’re going to go ahead and believe this video was not staged. But we’re not a hard sell when it comes to entertaining videos.
